Mayor of London bans body-shaming ads on London transport networks

The new mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has taken a stand against negative body image and body-shaming by banning ads on the London Underground and bus networks that promote unhealthy and unrealistic body standards.

The new policy plans to block ads like those that ran in 2015 as part of Protein World's controversial "Are you beach body ready?" campaign.

Thousands of people signed a Change.org petition to remove the ads, after a debate came up implying the messages of such ads and how they affect young people by making them make unhealthy diet choices.

"As the father of two teenage girls, I am extremely concerned about this kind of advertising which can demean people, particularly women, and make them ashamed of their bodies, " said Khan. "It is high time it came to an end. Nobody should feel pressurized, while they travel on the Tube or bus, into unrealistic expectations surrounding their bodies, and I want to send a clear message to the advertising industry about this," Khan said.

The new policy extends only to those that Transportation for London (TFL), the group that manages the London Underground and bus networks, feels encourage people to conform to unrealistic body shapes, but it is not clear where TFL will end up drawing that line.
