Why do African leaders go abroad for medical treatment? Read response from Nigerians

When the news of President Buhari's travel to London was spread this morning, many people expectedly cried foul because grapevine sources had initially broken the news  but the official spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said he was hale and hearty.

BBC Africa took a poll on social media with the question "Why African leaders go abroad for medical treatment?

Some of the comments are below:

Because they can't be bothered to build such hospitals in Africa. They are wicked/selfish leaders.
The same Buhari banned government officials from travelling abroad for "medical tourism" Travelling abroad for treatment should be a BIG reminder of his own failure as a leader.
#shame

The annoying aspect is that the Nigerian presidential villa clinic got the highest budget ever in the history of Nigeria this year. One would like to ask what Buhari is good for. Even the presidential clinic that he robbed Nigerians with can't even treat otitis media. Nigeria in a ship heading to Syria and Iraq. We are almost in Fallujah.

You damn BBC goons.. That is how you want it, stop being sarcastic, u whites robbed off our resources and made yourselves superior, impacting a beleif that whatever is african is inferior, its because you want the system to be like that, now all you are doing is inciting people against their leaders in order to cause instability so that you gain, sorry, we are watching!!!!

This man is a lunatic! I wonder why some Nigerians could not think straight that this Fulani man is brought back to kill people in Nigeria. I am beginning to think if there should be a hospital in Abuja-not to even talk of the Presidential Villa, and yet these politicians are always flying abroad for medical treatment. My question is, is Buhari specially created? Or what specialty does he have that the whole of Nigeria's professional medical doctors can't treat him? See someone who can't construct good English, but because of the free money meant for the poor, which he didn't suffer for, can now belittle the knowledge and wisdom God gave these wonderful doctors. In fact, most of them studied abroad-the painful part of it. It is really a pity. Nigerian's need to be wise. This is really arching........., I'm even lacking what to say! May God help us.

Self denial ,self hate & inferiority complex .. Anything that comes from the west is best ,a bit of mental slavery .And it's also because they can't deliver good health services in their countries. Remember, their children also study overseas.. Shame on African leaders

As said by the spokesman, president Buhari was treated by two local doctors, and both of the doctors suggest he should go abroad for futher evaluation and treatment. To have efficient world standard hospitals in all aspects of health is not feasible even in developed countries. Each counry has it's area(s) of specialisation. President Buhari should not be blamed for current state of hospitals in Nigeria till he finish his tenure without inprovement. The budget he drafted through which he can develop the country was approved few months ago. So he excuted the budget of past administration in most of his one year in office, in which the capital projects is less than 18%. African leaders are to be blamed for our underdevelopment. But some european and American countries are conributory factor to the current state african underdevelopment. After all, the loot from african treasuries is stashed in your banks with which you invest and invent to develop your countries at the expense of the poor africans. That's why i love my president. When Britain prime minister accused Nigeria of being "fantastically corrupt" the response of president Buhari was apt, he said "...i don't want apology from UK but the return of our looted money". In just one year in offices, he has recovered more than 3 trilion Naira in cash and asset without the return of the loot in Britain.

President Buhari is the greatest hypocrite ever in Nigerian politics. He made a law banning overseas medical expenses for government officials, he denied our children studying overseas from accessing fx, he has denied industries of procuring essential raw materials from overseas, and fx rate is beyond reach of citizens who wish do business overseas, yet for every little excuse he travels abroad wasting scarce resources. Meanwhile he made a huge provision in the 2016 budget for his Aso Rock Clinic. Why couldn't he get himself treated locally? Nigeria has renowned specialist doctors. But the problem is Buhari doesn't trust them. Is he afraid they might kill him? While he is afraid to die, he has committed genocide in parts of Nigeria. Due to his wickedness, lives are lost everyday. Our security men and women who were very accommodating and friendly before he became President are now very unfriendly. What kind of leader is he? Anyway, I pray that he recovers fast and return to his job with a different attitude. No country should pray to have as leader a man like Buhari. He is too incompetent.

Shame on him.. I taught he said he's bringing change in every sector including health, so why going to London?.. Is his scam change mantra agenda not old enough to build a standard hospital?.. I have traditional herb that can cure that his ear infection in one week... That is what you get when you refuse to listen to the cries of Nigerians and hear and obey the rule of law.. The gods of the land will make him deaf if he doesn't take time.. The chukwu okike abiama of Ndi igbo and mazi nnamdi kalu is not sleeping..

So there is no hospital here that can treat him, even the whooping funded villa hospital? He ban other people from medical treatment abroad but uses presidential diplomacy to travel abroad for treatment while Olisa Metuh is denied same courtesy. Change ntoooo!

The African leader addiction with White man's country has become an accepted norm. In Nigeria they are talking of patronizing Made in Nigeria goods and services but they themselves don't want to have anything to do with Made in Nigeria even though they can get these goods and services, even better in Nigeria. It is a mental slavery mentality.
