Out of 30,000 health centres, only 2,500 are currently working- NHIS Nigeria

The Director-General of the Nigerian Orientation Agency, NAO, Mr Garba Abari received the acting Executive Secretary of National Health Health Insurance Scheme NHIS, Mr. Femi Akingbade, on a courtesy visit today June 3.

After congratulating the new DG on his appointment, Mr Akingbade said that he was sure President Muhammadu Buhari must have appointed him based on your past track records; being confident that he would bring his many years of experience to bear.

"Our two organisations are very key to the change agenda of this present administration. We are here to strengthen existing ties.

"NHIS is out to create a universal coverage for all Nigerians. We will make health services available to deliver on our mandate.

"We will also ensure that health services are delivered in a proper and standard way. And to also to protect rights of Nigerians", he said.

According to him, Nigeria has about 30 thousand primary health care facilities. And surprisingly only about 2, 500 are currently functional.

"Two years ago, a task force was set up between NHIS and NOA. It spells out how to utilise our spread to ensure health services. Let people be orientated that a little bit that philanthropists contribute to health care services means a lot. We want our existing collaboration to work further to ensure Nigerians are better informed about health insurance scheme. Partnership with the NOA will definitely take NHIS to the level we are working towards attaining."

The DG on his part promised to work together to deliver on both agencies' respective mandates.

"NOA is better positioned to undertake nationwide awareness and sensitization campaign. We are present in all 774 LGAs. I will assure you that NOA will always be there for the NHIS. All our awareness campaign platforms will be deployed", he concluded.
