Ekiti state workers declare fasting and prayers over unpaid salaries

Hmmm.

Striking workers in Ekiti state on Monday declared a three-day fasting and prayer spiritual strategy to seek divine intervention in the crisis between them and the state government over  non-payment of five months salary arrears.

The fasting and prayer, according to a press release, will begin Tuesday and  end on Thursday.

The release was signed by the secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. O. P. Olayemi,; Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Mr. J.A. Adebayo and Joint Negotiating Council, Mr. Oladele Ayodeji.

It reads in part, “In view of the current situation in Ekiti State as regards the ongoing strike embarked on by the entire workers in Ekiti State.

“All workers in Ekiti State are invited to a three-day fasting and prayer from Tuesday to Thursday 16th June. It is expected that this should be replicated at all the 16 local government areas in Ekiti State.”

Meanwhile, a socio-economic group in the state, the Nigeria Progressive Vanguard (NPV) has given Governor Ayodele Fayose, a 72-hour ultimatum within which to pay the workers five months salary arrears or face mass action.

The group said it had concluded arrangement to embark on a mass protest against the state government over failure to pay workers’ salaries, adding that the hardship being faced by the workers was “worrisome, embarrassing and un-called for.”

Its state chairman, Hon. Bamayi-Lawal Adegoke, and Secretary, Hon. Tayo Ojo, said in a statement that the situation at hand called for broad intervention to save the state and its people from dire consequences.
