American footballer mistakenly shoots self dead

Zurlon Tipton of the Indianapolis Colts NFL football

Former Central Michigan and NFL running back, Zurlon Tipton died today after he accidentally shot himself in the stomach at a car dealership, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

Tipton, 26, was reaching into his vehicle to get a bag containing two guns and one of the guns discharged, hitting him, Roseville police said.

Police said information from St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit confirmed that Tipton died from his injuries after the incident about 9:30 a.m. in a service bay at Mike Riehl's Roseville Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, 25800 Gratiot.

Tipton reportedly brought his Jeep in to the dealership to be serviced. He was placing personal belongings into the bag and while doing so, one of the handguns inside the bag discharged, with a round striking him, police said in a release. Police said in the release that the man was talking at the time he was transported to the hospital.

The owner of the guns has not been confirmed. Police said in a release "it is not clear at this time why the subject felt it necessary to be in possession of two handguns."

No one else was hurt and nothing was damaged in the incident, police said.
