Wow.
You never know if the gorilla was going to harm the child though. That shows you the value people should have human life. Every single human deserves to be protected.
The gorilla shot dead at a US zoo after a three-year-old fell boy into its enclosure was trying to protect him, a witness said.
The boy crawled through the barrier at Cincinnati Zoo in the US state of Ohio yesterday and fell into a moat, zoo director Thane Maynard told reporters.
The gorilla, a 17-year-old male named Harambe weighing more than 180kg, "went down and got him," Mr Maynard said.
Witnesses said the gorilla dragged the screaming boy around the habitat before the zoo's dangerous animal response team shot and killed the animal around 10 minutes after the boy first entered the enclosure.
"I don't know if the screaming did it or too many people hanging on the edge, if he thought we were coming in, but then he pulled the boy down away further from the big group.
"The little boy himself had already been talking about wanting to [go into the enclosure] ... get in the water. The mother's like, 'No, you're not, no, you're not'."
After the gorilla was shot dead the boy was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The zoo has been criticised on social media for killing the animal instead of using tranquilizers.
The response team reportedly decided to shoot the gorilla rather than tranquilize it because a tranquilizer would not have taken effect immediately.
A number of social media users also took aim at the child's parents, suggesting they were also responsible for the gorilla's death.
"Today, an endangered gorilla was shot at the 'Cincy' Zoo because a toddler's parents were to damn lazy to watch their child," one Twitter user said.
