German Medical Association calls for better healthcare for refugees

The president of the German Medical Association has called for better health care coverage for refugees in the country, ahead of a meeting of medical experts in Hamburg on Tuesday.

"Asylum seekers and refugees need a health card in order to be integrated into the system.

"Easy access to medical care prevents illnesses from getting worse and in the end reduces medical costs,’’ Frank Montgomery said ahead of the gathering.

Refugee health care will be one of the main topics at this year's German Medical Assembly.

It said that during the programme, 250 representatives from the medical community will gather to discuss and adopt professional regulations and draft policy recommendations on current issues.

Comprehensive coverage for asylum seekers is so far administered only in Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin and Schleswig-Holstein.

Although several other states have set out legal parameters on the matter, at the community level, they have yet to be implemented.

``Thanks to often-voluntary commitments by many doctors, the primary care system for asylum seekers functions quite well for the most part.
"One problem though is that medical care for asylum seekers is limited to acute illnesses,’’ Montgomery said.

The group is also expected to discuss drug pricing, as well as revive talks on a contentious new fee schedule that have so far failed.
