"The ratio of Nigerian kidney doctors to Nigerians is 1:1 million"- Dr Ebun Bamboye

Dr Ebun Bamgboye is the President of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology, NAN.  Nephrology is a branch of medical science that deals with diseases of the kidneys. He is also the Clinical Director of St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos. He was at the World Kidney Day event organised by the company recently and he spoke about how diabete, hypertension and reckless drug use are risk factors for coming down with kidney disease.

The theme was 'Kidney disease and children: act early to prevent it!'

He urged Nigerians to their diabetes and hypertension, and stop indiscriminate use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NASAIDs), saying they trigger kidney diseases. He also advised that the best way to treat the diseases was to find it early and treat as soon as the symptoms start developing.

Dr Bamboye said that there are 17,000 new cases in Nigeria, annually.
"There is a scarcity of nephrologists in Nigeria and the figures are quite disturbing.  What we have is one nephrologist to one million Nigerians, so we need to encourage doctors to specialise in nephrology", he said.

The cost of treatment is exceedingly high. It is best to prevent the disease than to treat it. He also added that exercises and lifestyle changes are important for being healthy.

He also mentioned that children are susceptible to kidney diseases.
