Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator (Akwa Ibom northwest), has been named the minority‎ leader of the senate; he was nominated by the south-south caucus of the PDP in the senate.

However, Akpabio's emergence as the Senate Minority Leader is supposedly in violation of Senate Standing Orders which prohibit a non-ranking senator from emerging as a principal officer of the senate.

An Abuja federal high court last week, rejected an‎ application seeking to stop senate president, Bukola Saraki,  from naming Akpabio as minority leader of the senate.
