Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator (Akwa Ibom northwest), has been named the minority leader of the senate; he was nominated by the south-south caucus of the PDP in the senate.
However, Akpabio's emergence as the Senate Minority Leader is supposedly in violation of Senate Standing Orders which prohibit a non-ranking senator from emerging as a principal officer of the senate.
An Abuja federal high court last week, rejected an application seeking to stop senate president, Bukola Saraki, from naming Akpabio as minority leader of the senate.
