State of emergency declared in Charlotte, NC #BlackLivesMatter

A man places his hands on his head as he faces off against officers in riot gear on the second night of unrest in Charlotte

A state of emergency has been declared in Charlotte after a man was shot in the head by a civilian as a peaceful protest over the fatal police shooting of a black man turned violent.

The man is on life support after being wounded by a civilian during the tense demonstration outside the Omni Hotel, as the city experienced another night of unrest following the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by a black police officer, a day before.

Charlotte Medic said it has taken eight patients - seven police officers and one civilian - to area hospitals during the protests.

On Thursday morning, hotel and restaurant employees and security guards started cleaning up dozens of broken windows after protesters smashed buildings and painted the slogan 'Black Lives Matter' on walls.

Demonstrators were also seen looting a convenience store after smashing its windows and a shop that sells athletic wear for fans of Charlotte's National Basketball League team, the Hornets. Others set fire to trash cans.

Some protesters expressed anger at the lawlessness exhibited by fellow demonstrators. One woman was heard shouting, 'Stop - that's not what this is about,' as young men broke bottles in the street.
Bank of America told its thousands of employees at its 60-story downtown skyscraper to stay home Thursday.
