Woman jailed for running sex racket aborts pregnancy in prison

Mumbai: Woman held for running sex den aborts foetus in Byculla prison

After being arrested for running a sex racket last month, a 24-year-old model, who is now lodged at the Byculla women’s jail, India, endangered her own life by terminating her eight-week pregnancy.

Local reports have it that she was rushed to the Hospital, where she refused to undergo post-abortion treatment, and was sent back to jail after being provided with basic medication.

Rekha Vaishnav was arrested for running a prostitution racket under the guise of the production house. She had allegedly lured aspiring models with roles in movies and then taken pictures of them in the nude to later force the girls into prostitution. After a court sent her to judicial custody, she was lodged in the Byculla jail on July 1.

“The prisoner was 8 weeks pregnant, but she concealed this from the jail authorities... She would take medicines from the doctors in jail. Recently, she complained of excessive bleeding and was rushed to the JJ hospital,” a senior jail officer said.

A senior doctor from the JJ hospital said that a doctor at the jail first attended to the woman and since her bleeding did not stop, she was rushed to the hospital on July 27.

Taking a lesson from the incident, the Byculla women’s prison has now made it compulsory for every new prisoner to undergo a Urine Pregnancy Test (UPT) before being lodged in the jail.

The officer also stated that jail authorities will ensure that new prisoners consume pills in front of them, in order to prevent any abuse.
