Haircare and Beauty: L’Oréal opens research centre in Johannesburg



After 13 years of research activity in South Africa, multinational beauty company, L’Oréal has opened a new Research & Innovation Centre in Johannesburg.


African hair, skin specificities and beauty routines as well as expectations of its sub-Saharan consumers will be studied.

According to the company website, the Research activity in South Africa started in 2003 with an Evaluation Center focused on consumer knowledge and product assessment.

Cutting edge instruments to visualize the skin surface, the spots or to measure hair breakage and rigorous protocols are used daily to assess the technical, functional and sensorial benefits of the products. The key areas will be skin evenness, sebum, acne, dryness, hair manageability, sensitive scalp and the fine tuning of fragrances with innovative products ranging from hair care, hair color, relaxers and shapers to personal hygiene.


L’Oréal South Africa has four divisions which manage over 26 brands including Dark & Lovely, Armani and Maybelline.

The new Research & Innovation Centre will cooperate with the African scientific ecosystem, universities, dermatologists, natural biodiversity centres as well as hairdressers.
