The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Oluranti Adebule, has said that the state government would implement the school feeding programme as soon as the Federal Government provides its counterpart funding.
She added that the increasing the nutrition content of meals served had the potential of keeping pupils healthy and encouraging them to stay in school.
According to her, the state government has made provision for the programme in the budget, but it is “awaiting the intervention of the Federal Government since the programme is designed to be funded by the Federal and State Governments on 60:40 ratio counterparts funding. Thus, there is the need to wait on the Federal Government to kick start the programme.’’
The Deputy Governor also blamed the crisis rocking many parts of the country for the influx of people to safer zones like Lagos State.
She was of the opinion that the first step would be to interface with the parents of such children and enlighten them on the need for them to enroll in school.
