The connection between genetics and sexual health (Video)

Genes

When we think of sexual health, we often think of how often we are having sex. Sexual health goes beyond the frequency of having sex into the health of your penis and sexual diseases you are genetically predisposed to.

The Role Genetics Play

Genetics and sexual health go hand in hand. Obviously we are handed down various traits through our DNA. Things such as how big or small your penis, whether or not you develop erectile dysfunction and even which STDs may already be inside of your body. We tend to blame ourselves and our own personal actions for our sexual health but the study of DNA proves otherwise.

Genes

Did you know that your libido is determined by genetics? How often you become aroused and just how much sex you have is based on a gene known as DRD4. When this gene is varied, men and women alike show a lower interest in having sex. This may seem like bad news at first but it’s actually a significant finding.

Genetic Disorders and Sexual Health

Disorders affecting sexual health that stem from genetic disorders actually can be easily solved compared to disorders that are caused from unhealthy practices such as smoking, drinking alcohol and unhealthy diet. Sexual health issues that are already present in our bodies at birth can be prevented or remedied through physical therapy or other forms of treatment such as herbal/ayurvedic supplements.

Treatment for Genetic Disorders

Gene therapy is another form of treatment for people with sexual health disorders. This kind of therapy basically attempts to restore the nerves of the penis to ensure that you can become erect and stay erect. There is also a form of therapy that inserts genes into your body that normalize your sexual health so that you can get your sex life back.

Linking Genetics and Sexual Health

The connection between sexual health and genetics is one that is obvious and yet often overlooked. Much like some of us are genetically predisposed to diseases such as diabetes, cancer and hypertension— sexual function can be attributed to your DNA. You wouldn’t expect a person with two morbidly obese parents with diabetes to end up completely healthy or free of disease. Sexual health is the same way.

Many men blame themselves for things such as erectile dysfunction or the size of their penis when such isn’t the case. Any interesting fact is that size doesn’t matter to most women but it affects men in a big way.
