A New Year’s celebration in one of the most famous riverside attractions, Shanghai’s Bund, turned into a stampede and at least 35 people died.
China’s president Xi Jinping has ordered local officials to “treat the injured with all disposable forces and take care of the aftermath” while the prime minister, Li Keqiang, urged authorities to “comfort the families and strength security at crowded places.”
The tragedy was reportedly caused by an wrongly timed attempt to create excitement before the traditional New Year’s Eve countdown and there were too many people on the Bund platform. Those who fainted were directed stomped upon and some were vomiting blood.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that many fake banknotes thrown from a upper-floor Bund window into the crowd about a half-hour before midnight, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua, saying that the results “went astray.” What were actually coupons looked exactly like US dollars, one onlooker confirmed. Most victims were “young people in their 20s”, the agency said.
